Here in the Salt Lake City area we’re accustomed to seasonal bouts of air quality that makes it hard to breathe- and hard to get much peace from the air we do get! Between wildfires and inversion, dry air and autumn dryness, it can be hard to take a deep breath and feel good about it. The good news is that there are many celebrated herbs that have been used for ages to help support, cleanse, nourish, and soothe the entire respiratory system- and many products that feature these special herbs.

One of our favorite classes of herbs are the demulcents. These herbs deliver a soothing mucilage to specific parts of the body- and many of them focus their work on the lungs where they can help moisturize, protect, and soothe. If you’ve ever felt like your lungs are dried out and battered, a demulcent herb like Mullein, Lungwort, Elecampane, or Plantain Leaf might help you feel a lot better.

There are also other herbs that help cleanse, detoxify, nourish, and repair the delicate lung tissues. We prefer using these herbs in the form of tea since we get the double benefit of inhaling the medicinal steam right into the respiratory system in between sips of delicious herbal tea. Some of our favorite lung supporting herbs include Yerba Santa, Coltsfoot (pictured above), Holy Basil, Reishi Mushroom, Lobelia, Peppermint, Yerba Mate, and Licorice Root.
